Common symptoms in detail
- Jerking or delayed shifts – especially when pulling away and at low speed.
- Gears disappear – odd or even gears are lost, the gearbox drops into neutral or loses all gears, often when warm.
- Reverse does not engage, or no gears engage at all.
- Warning light or message on the dashboard, e.g. “Gearbox fault”.
- Fault codes such as P17BF, P0841, P189C, P173500 or P173600.
- Unusual noises – knocking, whining or humming.
- Judder when pulling away, which may point to a worn clutch or dual-mass flywheel.
- Oil leaks around the gearbox.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my DSG jerk?
The most common causes are a worn clutch, a mechatronic fault or, in wet-clutch gearboxes, old oil. Diagnostics will reveal the cause.
Can I drive if the DSG loses gears?
We do not recommend it. The gearbox may drop into neutral unexpectedly and the fault may get worse. Contact us and we will assess the situation.
