Timing chain replacement in Espoo
In many modern cars a timing chain replaces the timing belt. The chain can wear and stretch unexpectedly, which puts the engine at risk.

Experience and special tools
We have a comprehensive range of special tools and experience in replacing timing chains and other timing components on many makes and models.
The service includes
- Timing chain and sprocket replacement
- Chain tensioner and guide replacement
- All necessary seals
- Engine timing check with special tools
Symptoms of a stretched timing chain
- Rattling or clattering on a cold start
- Engine warning light and camshaft timing fault codes
- Rough running or loss of power
If you suspect a stretched chain, book diagnostics – replaced in time, you avoid engine damage.
Timing chain replacement – engines we know well
Replacing a stretched timing chain is precise work that needs engine-specific special tools to lock the timing. We have particular experience with these engines, whose chains are known to stretch:
- PSA 1.4 and 1.6 – Peugeot and Citroën
- Mini – same engine family as the PSA 1.4 and 1.6 petrol engines
- BMW N13 – the 1.6-litre petrol engine (see BMW timing chain replacement)
- VAG TSI/TFSI – Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda and Seat
The 1.2 and 1.4 TSI timing chain (EA111)
The older Volkswagen Group 1.2 TSI and 1.4 TSI engines (EA111, approx. model years 2006–2014) have a timing chain whose stretching and tensioner wear are a known fault. The newer EA211 engines (from approx. 2012–2014) have a timing belt – see timing belt replacement.
- Typical symptom: a rattling noise for a few seconds on a cold start
- Engine warning light and camshaft/crankshaft timing fault codes
- Rough running or loss of power
- At worst the chain jumps a tooth and the valves can hit the pistons
A timing chain has no fixed replacement interval: it is replaced when measurements or symptoms show stretch. We check the chain by reading the camshaft and crankshaft timing values with diagnostic equipment – so you know whether a replacement is due before any damage is done.
Timing chain replacement price
The price depends on the engine: the amount of work, the parts replaced (chain, tensioner, guides, sprockets and seals) and whether, for example, the water pump is replaced at the same time. Send us your registration number and we will give you an exact quote and tell you what the kit includes.

Frequently asked questions
Does a timing chain last the life of the car?
A timing chain is designed to last a long time, but some engines are known for chain stretch. React to symptoms straight away.
How much does a timing chain replacement cost?
A timing chain replacement costs from €2,000 at IVERA. The exact price depends on the engine and the parts replaced – send us your registration number for an exact quote – we know PSA 1.4/1.6, Mini and BMW N13 chain jobs well.
What is the 1.4 TSI timing chain replacement interval?
There is no fixed manufacturer interval. On the older 1.2 and 1.4 TSI (EA111) engines the chain can stretch well before 150,000 km, so a cold-start rattle and timing fault codes should be checked straight away. We measure chain stretch with diagnostics.
Does the 1.4 TSI have a timing belt or a timing chain?
It depends on the engine generation: the older EA111 engines (approx. 2006–2014) have a chain, the newer EA211 engines a belt. We check it from your registration number.
Do you replace timing chains on Peugeot, Citroën, Mini and BMW?
Yes. We replace timing chains on, among others, PSA 1.4 and 1.6 engines (Peugeot, Citroën), Mini models and the BMW N13 engine.
