DSG gearbox – how it works, types and service

DSG (Direct-Shift Gearbox) is the Volkswagen Group’s dual-clutch transmission: an automatic gearbox with two clutches – one for the odd gears and one for the even gears. That is why gear changes are fast and without any break in power.

On this page we explain how DSG works, which DSG types exist, how often the oil should be changed and what the most common faults are.

How a DSG gearbox works

A DSG is essentially two manual gearboxes in one housing. One clutch handles gears 1, 3, 5 and 7, the other gears 2, 4, 6 and reverse. While you drive in one gear, the next gear is already engaged on the other shaft – the change happens by switching clutches, which takes only a fraction of a second.

The clutches and gears are controlled by the mechatronic unit, a combination of an electronic control unit and hydraulics. The mechatronic unit is the most important – and most common – failure point of a DSG.

Advantages of DSG

  • Fast gear changes without a break in power
  • Lower fuel consumption than a conventional torque-converter automatic
  • Sporty feel and manual gear selection

DSG gearbox types

There are several DSG types that differ in design and service needs. The key difference is the clutch: a dry clutch (DQ200) or a wet clutch running in oil (all others). Audi calls the same technology S tronic.

DQ200 – dry clutch

7-speed DSG for smaller front-wheel-drive models. Typical faults: mechatronic unit and clutch.

DQ250 – wet clutch

Widely used 6-speed DSG. Oil change every 60,000 km.

DQ250 →

DQ381 – wet clutch

7-speed DSG in newer models. Known fault: pressure sensors (P173500/P173600).

DQ400e – plug-in hybrids

6-speed wet-clutch DSG in GTE and e-tron models. Preventive K0 solenoid service.

DSG service and oil change

In wet-clutch DSG gearboxes the oil cools the clutches and works as hydraulic fluid, so it wears out in use. According to the manufacturer’s schedule, the oil and filter are changed every 60,000 km on the DQ250, DQ400 and DQ500, and every 60,000 / 120,000 km on the DQ381. The dry-clutch DQ200 has no regular gearbox oil change in its service schedule.

The most common DSG faults

  • Jerking or delayed shifts – especially when pulling away and at low speed.
  • Gears disappear – odd or even gears are lost, the gearbox drops into neutral or loses all gears, often when warm.
  • Reverse does not engage, or no gears engage at all.
  • Warning light or message on the dashboard, e.g. “Gearbox fault”.
  • Fault codes such as P17BF, P0841, P189C, P173500 or P173600.
  • Unusual noises – knocking, whining or humming.
  • Judder when pulling away, which may point to a worn clutch or dual-mass flywheel.
  • Oil leaks around the gearbox.

Most faults come from the mechatronic unit or clutch wear and can be repaired without replacing the whole gearbox. At IVERA, mechatronic repair costs from €930 and comes with a 1-year warranty. Read more: DSG gearbox problems and symptoms.

Frequently asked questions about the DSG gearbox

What is a DSG gearbox?

DSG is the Volkswagen Group’s dual-clutch transmission: an automatic gearbox with two clutches for the odd and even gears. Gear changes are fast and without a break in power.

Is DSG an automatic gearbox?

Yes. For the driver a DSG works like an automatic, but technically it is a dual-clutch transmission, not a conventional torque-converter automatic.

Which cars have a DSG gearbox?

DSG gearboxes are used in Volkswagen, Skoda, Seat and Cupra models, and by Audi under the name S tronic.

Is DSG reliable?

When serviced correctly a DSG can last the life of the car. The most important things are oil changes at the manufacturer’s intervals on wet-clutch gearboxes and reacting to symptoms early.

How much does DSG gearbox repair cost?

At IVERA, DSG mechatronic repair costs from €930 and a complete mechatronic replacement from €2,300.
