BMW automatic transmission and xDrive transfer case oil change

BMW calls the oil in many automatic gearboxes “lifetime”, but the gearbox maker ZF recommends an oil change about every 80,000–120,000 km. Fresh oil keeps shifts smooth and extends the gearbox’s life.

We change the oil in both the ZF automatic transmission and the xDrive transfer case.

What does the oil change include?

ItemWhat we do

Frequently asked questions

Should BMW automatic transmission oil be changed if it is “lifetime”?

We recommend it. The gearbox maker ZF recommends an oil change about every 80,000–120,000 km, because the oil ages and loses its properties.

Why does xDrive jerk when turning?

The most common cause is old transfer case oil, which stops the transfer case clutch from slipping smoothly. An oil change often fixes it if the transfer case is not yet damaged.

How much does a BMW automatic transmission oil change cost?

A ZF 8HP oil change costs from €490 (incl. new oil pan with filter and ZF-approved oil). An xDrive transfer case oil change with adaptation costs €129.
