In short: in most cars the brake fluid is changed every two years or according to the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule. The interval is time-based, because the fluid ages even if the car is driven very little.
Why does brake fluid age?
Brake fluid is hygroscopic, which means it absorbs moisture from the air. Moisture lowers the boiling point of the fluid. Under hard braking – for example on a long downhill – hot fluid can start to vaporise, the brake pedal goes soft and braking power drops. Moisture also corrodes the brake system from the inside.
Signs of old brake fluid
- The brake pedal feels soft or goes down far
- More than two years have passed since the last change
- The fluid has darkened
- The service indicator or schedule says a change is due
Many faults cannot be felt in everyday driving at all, so follow the interval even without symptoms.

Frequently asked questions

In most cars every two years or according to the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule.
Why change the brake fluid if I drive very little?
Because brake fluid absorbs moisture over time regardless of mileage. Moisture lowers the boiling point and corrodes the system.
