In short: if the check engine light is on steadily and the engine runs normally, you can usually drive carefully to a workshop, but have the fault checked soon. If the light flashes or the car jerks, avoid driving – the fault can damage the catalytic converter or the engine.
What does the check engine light mean?
The yellow or orange light with an engine symbol comes on when the engine control unit detects a fault that can affect how the engine runs or its emissions. The control unit stores a fault code that can be read with diagnostic equipment.
Steady or flashing?
| Situation | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Light on steadily | A fault that does not immediately damage the engine | Book diagnostics within the next few days |
| Light flashing | Serious misfire – unburnt fuel can damage the catalytic converter | Reduce load and avoid driving, contact us |
| Light on + loss of power | The car has gone into limp mode to protect the engine | Drive carefully to a workshop or call a tow truck |
Most common causes
- Spark plugs or ignition coils (misfires)
- Lambda (oxygen) sensor
- Mass air flow sensor or intake air leak
- EGR valve and diesel particulate filter (DPF)
- Fuel system pressure faults
- Loose fuel cap or evaporative system leak
Do not just clear the fault code
Clearing the fault code only switches the light off for a while if the cause is still there. In addition, the OBD check at the vehicle inspection can see if the fault memory has just been cleared. The right solution is to find the cause and fix the fault.
Diagnostics at IVERA
We read the fault codes and run component tests with modern diagnostic equipment. We explain the cause and the repair options clearly before any work. Our customer Senni said: “Once they found the cause, they could give an exact repair cost, and it held. The car was fixed in one day.” Read more: diagnostics and fault code reading.
