Engine oil being poured during an oil change

In short: if the red oil pressure warning light comes on while driving, stop safely and switch off the engine immediately. Without oil pressure the engine bearings and turbo can be damaged within minutes. Do not keep driving until the cause has been found.

What does the oil pressure warning light mean?

The oil pressure warning light (red oil can) comes on when the oil pressure switch or sensor detects that there is not enough pressure in the engine’s lubrication system. The oil may then not be reaching the bearings, camshaft and turbo.

Many cars – for example Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda and Seat – have two different oil lights: yellow means the oil level is low (top up soon) and red means there is no oil pressure (stop the engine). Check in the owner’s manual which light is on.

What to do straight away

  • Stop in a safe place and switch off the engine.
  • Wait 5–10 minutes for the oil to drain into the sump and check the oil level with the dipstick on level ground.
  • If the oil is too low, top up with the oil recommended by the manufacturer. If the light goes out and the engine runs normally, drive carefully to a workshop to find out why the oil level dropped.
  • If the oil level is fine and the light stays on, do not drive – call a tow truck. It may be the oil pump or a blocked pickup pipe.
  • If the engine knocks or rattles, do not start it again.

Most common causes

CauseTypical signWhat we do
Too little oilThe light comes on in corners or when brakingTop up and find the leak or the reason for oil consumption
Faulty oil pressure switch or sensorThe light is on, but the engine sounds normalMeasure the oil pressure with a gauge and replace the sensor
Blocked oil pump pickup strainerPressure drops especially when hot or at higher revsRemove and clean the sump, find the cause (long oil change intervals, sludge)
Oil pump or pump drive faultThe light comes on suddenly, the engine may start knockingMeasure the oil pressure and repair or replace the pump
Worn bearings or wrong oilThe light is on at idle when hotCheck the oil quality and assess the engine’s condition

Measuring the oil pressure shows whether the fault is real

A fault code alone does not tell whether the oil pressure is really low or whether the sensor is faulty. We measure the oil pressure with a separate gauge at idle and at higher revs, both cold and warm. This avoids replacing parts for nothing – and finds a real pressure problem before the engine is damaged.

Prevention

The most important things are the right oil and frequent enough oil changes. Long LongLife intervals and short trips can form sludge that blocks the oil pump pickup strainer. Check the oil level when you fill up, especially if the car uses oil. Read also: Oil change interval – how often should engine oil be changed?

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive with the oil pressure warning light on?

No. The red oil pressure light means the engine may have no lubrication. Switch off the engine immediately and check the oil level. If the light does not go out after topping up, call a tow truck.

What is the difference between the yellow and red oil light?

In many cars the yellow oil light warns of a low oil level and the red one of missing oil pressure. Yellow means “top up soon”, red means “stop the engine now”.

The oil pressure light flickers at idle – what does it mean?

The pressure is borderline when the engine is hot and running slowly. The cause can be low or wrong oil, a blocking pickup strainer, a worn oil pump or bearings – or a faulty sensor. Measuring the oil pressure tells which one it is.

How much does it cost to find an oil pressure fault?

It depends on the cause. Replacing a sensor is an inexpensive repair, an oil pump or engine repair clearly more. We measure the pressure and tell you the cause and price before the repair.
