Timing belt and timing components on an engine

In short: the timing belt is replaced at the interval given by the manufacturer – typically every 60,000–240,000 km or 4–10 years, whichever comes first. If you do not know when the belt was last replaced, replace it to be safe.

Why is the timing belt so important?

The timing belt turns the camshaft and keeps the valves in sync with the pistons. In most engines it also drives the water pump and runs over a tensioner and idler pulleys. If the belt breaks or jumps a tooth, in many engines the valves hit the pistons – and an expensive engine repair follows.

How do I know the replacement is due?

  • The interval in the service book or schedule is coming up (kilometres or years)
  • You have bought a used car and there is no record of the replacement
  • There is squealing or whining from the front of the engine
  • There is a coolant leak around the water pump

A timing belt can fail without warning, so do not stretch the interval even if there are no symptoms.

How much does a timing belt replacement cost?

The price depends above all on the engine: in some engines the timing belt is easy to reach, in others the job needs more dismantling. The parts replaced also affect the price:

  • timing belt, tensioner and idler pulleys (usually replaced as a kit)
  • water pump, if it sits behind the belt – recommended to replace at the same time
  • auxiliary belt and coolant

Timing belt or timing chain?

Many newer engines have a timing chain, which has no fixed replacement interval. A chain can still stretch – the typical symptom is a rattle on a cold start. If you hear it, book diagnostics before the chain causes engine damage.

Frequently asked questions

How often should the timing belt be replaced?

At the interval given by the manufacturer, typically every 60,000–240,000 km or 4–10 years – whichever comes first.

How much does a timing belt replacement cost?

At IVERA a timing belt replacement for VAG 1.0, 1.4 and 1.5 TSI engines costs €480, for plug-in hybrids and gas cars €580 and for eTSI engines €790. For other engines we give the price based on the registration number.

Should the water pump be replaced with the timing belt?

If the water pump sits behind the timing belt, it is usually worth replacing at the same time, because the engine is already open and a pump failure later can damage the new belt.

What happens if the timing belt breaks?

The engine stops, and in many engines the valves hit the pistons, which badly damages the engine.
