In short: a red warning light in a BMW means “stop safely now”, yellow means “the fault needs fixing soon” and green or blue is for information only. Many BMWs show a text on the central display as well as the light – read it, it often tells you exactly what to do.
The colour tells you how urgent it is
| Colour | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Red | Serious fault or safety risk | Stop safely and switch off the engine, do not drive on until it has been checked |
| Yellow / orange | Fault or service need | You can usually drive carefully, book a repair soon |
| Green / blue | Function switched on (e.g. lights, cruise control) | No action needed |
The most common BMW warning lights
| Light | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Check engine light (yellow engine) | The engine control unit has stored a fault, e.g. ignition, a sensor or emissions | Book diagnostics. If the light flashes, avoid driving |
| “Drivetrain malfunction” | The engine or gearbox is in limp mode, power is limited | Drive calmly to a workshop and contact us |
| Oil pressure (red oil can) | The oil pressure is too low | Stop and switch off the engine immediately |
| Oil level (yellow oil can) | There is too little oil | Top up with BMW-approved oil soon |
| Brake system (red (!) ) | Low brake fluid level or a brake fault | Do not drive before it is checked |
| Brake pad wear (yellow circle) | The pads have worn down to the wear sensor | Book a pad replacement soon |
| Tyre pressure (RPA/RDC, yellow tyre) | Pressure has dropped or the system has not been reset | Check the pressures and reset the system |
| Battery / charging (red battery) | The alternator is not charging or the battery is weak | Drive to a workshop, do not switch off the engine unnecessarily |
| Glow plug (yellow coil, diesel) | Pre-heating is on – if it stays on, there is a fault | Diagnostics if the light does not go out |
| Service reminder (CBS) | An oil, brake or other service is coming up | Book scheduled maintenance |
| AdBlue / emission system | AdBlue is running low or there is an SCR system fault | Top up AdBlue – if the message stays, the NOx sensor may need replacing; book diagnostics |
Do not just clear the fault code
A cheap code reader can switch the light off for a while, but if the cause is still there the light soon comes back. BMW systems also store module-specific faults that generic readers cannot see. We read the whole car’s fault memory with BMW diagnostics and explain the cause before the repair.

Frequently asked questions
What does the yellow check engine light mean on a BMW?
The engine control unit has detected a fault that can affect how the engine runs or its emissions. If the light is on steadily, you can usually drive carefully to a workshop. If it flashes or the car jerks, avoid driving.
What does “Drivetrain malfunction – reduced power” mean?
The BMW has put the engine or gearbox into limp mode to protect it. The cause can be, for example, ignition, turbo boost pressure, the fuel system or a sensor. Reading the fault codes tells the cause.
Can I reset a BMW warning light myself?
You can clear the fault code with a reader, but the light comes back if the fault is still there. At the vehicle inspection the OBD check can also see if the fault memory has just been cleared.
How much does BMW diagnostics cost?
It depends on the extent of the fault. We tell you the price in advance and the repair options before any work.
