In short: change the engine oil about every 10,000–15,000 km or at least once a year. In cars with a long-life (LongLife) service plan the interval can be up to 30,000 km or two years – but only if the way the car is used allows it.
Why does the oil need changing?
Engine oil ages and gets dirty in use. Combustion residue, fuel, moisture and metal particles build up in it, weakening its lubrication and wearing the moving parts of the engine. Just topping up the oil is not enough – the oil and oil filter must be changed regularly.
When should the oil be changed more often?
- You drive a lot of short trips and the engine does not warm up
- You drive a lot in winter or in freezing weather
- You tow a trailer or drive with heavy loads
- The car has a turbocharged engine and you drive mostly in the city
- The car uses oil or the oil darkens quickly
In these situations the long LongLife interval may be too long. Many drivers then choose a fixed yearly oil change.
The right oil grade
Besides viscosity, the manufacturer’s approval matters – for example the VW 504 00 / 507 00 type standards in Volkswagen Group cars. The wrong oil can shorten the life of the engine and the particulate filter. We always choose the oil according to the manufacturer’s requirements.
